Ideas and Other Stuff

Sometimes, I like looking for different ideas than the norm when studying a Bible passage... I decided it might be nice to put together a workspace that takes full advantage of how Libronix indexes resources. I started with a NASB with Strong's turned on and The New Treasury Cross Reference... Next I have Vine's Expository Dictionary for Old and New Testament Words. This is the key resource. Because it indexes on so many areas, I found out I can make it the target of a word or Strong's search, then have it link to a Topic index such as The NASB Topical index... Sometimes the associations make great sense, sometimes they don't... Have a look...

For those of you who are geeks, I have just noticed a new Open Source OS called ReactOS which is suppose to be a Windows clone... I will try it out later this week under VMWare and see if it plays nice with Libronix...

God Bless,
John

Hmmm, can I comission a review of ReactOS? I've not had a chance to play with it myself but you might force me to once my time clears up.

React OS is not there yet... Maybe in a year or two... (As soon as no one can buy XP on a new PC, I expect the development on the project to speed up.) Based on what I have been reading, it won't work with Libronix 3.0 even then because it will not have IE which this version of Libronix seems to require...

Yes but the really good news is that according to Bob Pritchett the next version of Libronix will not be built on the IE backbone. I highly anticipate that making Linux in general a more usable alternative.
Right now the only two reasons I don't use Linux on my computer are Bibleworks and Logos.

VM's for Libronix

I noticed the mention of VMWare as a viable option for running Logos in Linux. May I suggest one uses the VMWare Server. It's free and you can create VM's with it.
There is also win4lin pro (my personal favorite for running Libronixs) which has some really great features such as clip and paste from Linux to windows and visa versa, uses the same Documents folder as Linux and printer setup is a snap.
There are also KVM, Qeme, Kqemu, Bosch, Virtual Box well many VM's that can be used.
With win4lin the performance loss is virtually undetectable.
Of course the best solution would be to have a Linux version, but Libronix seems to be very anti Linux.
After several years of an email campaign suggesting a Linux version I got a rather pointed response stating "we do not support or do we plan to support Linux now or in the future." So from that day on I stopped buying resources and relied more on the open source, free and internet based products which do support Linux. And I have saved a tremendous amount of money in the process.
By the way E-sword works really great in Wine and they have started offering licensed products at an extremely reasonable price compared to the Libronix's products.

VMWare

I love VMWare, but it requires you still own a license to the commercial OS you use... I'm trying to find a low cost/free OS that will run on modern hardware and run Libronix natively... My dream would be find a a way to add a demo version (with Logos permission) of Libronix to the OX (OCPL) program offering along with other apps such as the ones at Portable Apps and a replacement OS that is MS Windows compatible...

VMWare Server

John your right that VMWare Sever requires a license but the license is free. You only have to register it.
I have been using it basically for experimenting with other linux os's. I do have an xp install using VMWare Server but rarely use it and Logos is installed to it and it works fine. However for my purposes win4lin pro woks much better for Logos. I only run Windows in emulators all in Linux.

ReactOS is based on WineHQ.

ReactOS is based on WineHQ. It's not bad for the development level they've reached, but it is far short of Windows still. You would probably be better off running Ubuntu Linux with Wine on top. I've installed it, and it does pretty well - and installed the easiest of everything I've tried so far.

Yes, ReactOS is not ready to

Yes, ReactOS is not ready to run serious Windows applications yet, but the project is trying really hard.

In Ubuntu with WineHQ, there is an installer for the e-Sword software package, which gives you access to some good content. But are we any closer at getting Libronix to run under Wine?
