On this sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks upon America I am reflecting not only upon the thousands of civilians murdered by those men but upon the demon which spawned such an event.

The footnote (sorry I had to) says that the whole sura has something to do with the battle of Badr in which Muhammad informed his followers that they were going to attack a trade caravan from Mecca. Apparently they were in open warfare with the Meccans at that time.
That explains why Surah 8 is titled "The spoils of war".

Sura 7 is named "The Heights" in one version and in another "the faculty of discernment". I presume we'll find out why as I read.

Truth is not a part of the religion of Islam. Hatred and violence are integral. Oh, sure there are lots of moderate muslims willing to declare otherwise.
