Bible Software in the Classroom

Computers in The Classroom

There's a post on the Logos Blog about Logos in the Classroom. Actually it's a commercial for a 15 minute talk by Senior VP Dale Pritchett, which itself is basically a commercial aimed at Seminary professors to convince them to replace their single classroom textbooks with the full Logos Digital Library. If you have the 15 minutes you should listen. If you only have about 7, do a quick read of the PDF transcript.
I have two simple observations to make.

Upgrade the audio please

The audio is probably over compressed. It's either that or the audio is the result of several takes and a bad patch job. Dale comes into various sentences sounding completely different and it seems with different breathing patterns; almost as if they've taken two or more clips and sliced and diced them into one speech. The only reason I mention this is because I found it annoying to listen to. I'm tempted to say it's over compressed because I've experienced the same phenomena with other Logos media. Michael Heiser's excellent lecture "The concept of the Godhead in the Old Testament" was plagued in it's Camtasia format with horrible over compression that introduced all sorts of nasty audio artifacts into the speech. It's worth downloading the MP3 on that one instead of listening to the stream.

Yes, But...

I agree wholeheartedly with the principle message of Mr. Pritchett's speech. But I also see a problem

Development Projects on SourceForge

In case there is anyone out there wanting to either look at the code, or get involved with the code behind PBB Updater or the CCEL Processor - these projects have been created on SourceForge.net.

PBB Updater: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pbbupdater/
CCEL Processor: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ccelprocessor/

Also, attached to this post are the installers for both applications. And the PBB Updater should get an update within the week. Final touches going on the new version right now.

My Library Assistant

MLA - My Library AssistantIntroduction

What is MLA?

MLA is a program that runs alongside Libronix and provides some new tools via some additions to the Libronix menus and a system tray icon.

What does MLA do?

MLA provides a way to create user defined Library Arrangements that include both book resources and other Libronix documents.

How does MLA work?

When MLA first starts it checks to see if Libronix is running. If it is then MLA adds some menu items to the current Libronix instance. If Libronix is not running then MLA will give the option to start Libronix with a chance to select from any existing Libronix Workspaces. Once Libronix and MLA are running together MLA will watch the Libronix menus and respond to the menu options that relate to MLA. The MLA menu options are handled by MLA and not by Libronix, this means that the first time you select one of the MLA options from the Libronix menu you may get a message informing you that the menu option has no associated script. That is ok. Just check the box to tell Libronix not to report this error in future.

You can quit MLA any time using the Exit option on the right-click menu ofthe MLA system tray icon. MLA will then remove itself from the Libronix menus and close. If you exit Libronix while MLA is still running MLA will close down automatically after a short pause.

Will MLA work on my PC?

MLA has been tested under Windows XP and Vista. It does not work on Windows98, or earlier. MLA has only been tested with single instances of Libronix and should not be used alongside any other Libronix start-up script.

Free Upgrade to your Logos packages

Logos Logo

I may not make a frequent habit of shameless link-baiting but I have to in this instance. For the price of shipping you can upgrade your current Logos packages to the brand new "ND" packages. Take a gander: Free Upgrade from Logos Bible Software OC to ND at PhilGons.com.

Of course I've already postulated that ND must mean "Non-Disclosure" since I didn't see anything about this on the Logos site.

If you've already made up your mind you can just aim straight for the upgrade page.

Is It Really That Tough?

Let me say upfront and for the record that I have never created a book for the Logos/Libronix system using Personal Book Builder. As an owner of WORDsearch and QuickVerse, (in addition to Logos), I have created user books in their formats, (the means of which is built into their products for free, automatically converts verse references and creates books that are fully searchable), but I haven't found a compelling reason given my method and scope of Bible study to invest in both the initial cost and annual fees that Logos charges for PBB. (Let me also say upfront that this is just me and my needs. I have the utmost respect and appreciation for those whose areas of interest and ministry really benefit from this tool and are willing to share the fruits of their labor with others here and elsewhere.) And please understand that I am not being sarcastic or rhetorical or critical of Logos (or especially of PBB users) in my question. I really just simply don't understand and welcome any and all insight and this seems like a safe and knowledge-rich place to ask.

The catalyst for my posting this lingering query of mine is the recent offering of the A.W. Tozer collection in pre-pub on Logos.com. The substantial 55 volume set will be sold for $399.95 when it is complete, but can be purchased now for just $189.95 which seems fairly reasonable, equating to about $3.45 per book. The challenge in my understanding and the indication that there is something I am probably missing is that I purchased an almost (if not) identical Tozer collection for my WORDsearch library about six-months ago for $69.95 or about $1.27 per book. (I have since found it offered routinely on ebay for only $29.95. Ouch! That's just 54 cents for each book.)

Read Through The Bible In A Group This Year

Since the turn of the year is nearly upon us and since it's customary to begin a new bible reading program at that time I want to invite you on a journey through the Bible with a growing group of like minded individuals. Like any potential adventure it could be quite dangerous. First it might be dangerous because the program I'm going to suggest is in "beta" mode right now. That means that it's stable enough to test but not necessarily stable enough to call stable; though in all fairness I have not found it to be unstable.

Second it's likely to be dangerous to your current way of life. God's word has a powerful effect on those who actually read it. It will change you and that for the better.

The First thing you need to do is take a look at the Logos Bible software page on the Global Bible Reader Beta Test. This is where you'll be able to read about and download the program. Let's assume you're interested, what can you expect?

Let me walk you through the current beta version which was announced just this week in the Logos newsgroups.

PBB_Updater: Auto Updating

So, today an update to PBB_Updater was made that will allow it to update itself. No longer will you need to pay attention to the Recent Comments to know if I have made an update!

How do you get this functionality, you ask?

1. Open Windows Explorer and make a backup copy of the mySettings.xml file - naming the backup mySettings_Upgrade.xml. You will find this file at: C:\Program Files\StillTruth.com\PBB Updater (unless on a 64-bit edition in which case C:\Program Files (x86)\StillTruth.com\PBB Updater).
2. Download and install the latest PBB_Updater_Setup.msi.

PBB Updater

Recently Tom approached me about creating an updater program for all the wonderful PBB resources available here. Tom and I have been working together over the past couple weeks to implement his ideas. Attached is the new installer program for the PBB listings available both here and at Walther Library.

This is a new development project and you may run into some issues. If you do, please let me know the error messages that you get and I will try to correct them. When you run this installer, it will add a custom toolbar to the Libronix program to start the updater - as well as an icon on your desktop and start menu. No downloads will begin while Libronix is running though.

Features
1. Supports PBB files, Collections, Resource Associates, Annotations, and Workspaces.

Dominotez for Enhancing your Libronix Note Files

I had never seen this one before but it was referenced today on the Logos Newsgroups.  If you're looking for the ability to search across your Libronix Note files this might just be the trick you were looking for. Dominotez Libronix Note Enhancer
Edit: It appears that site is offline. So Thanks to Robert Pavich I've uploaded the File right here.
