PBB Collection File

I've had a few requests lately for a collection file and I suddenly remembered that back in March Graham had created the very collection file needed. It contains all the PBB's which were available through the PBB updater as of 3/7/2008. So with a huge wave of gratitude towards Graham I've uploaded the collection file right here.

To use it, just download it to "My documents/Libronix DLS/Collections/" and reload Libronix.

Thanks Graham!

Hengstenberg on Ecclesiastes

EDIT: I corrected a misspelling in the name of the book. Please download new version attached to this post below.

A PBB resource of E.W. Hengstenberg's Commentary on Ecclesiastes is now ready. You may download it below.

Ecclesiastes is part of the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. Wise are the words of Solomon, the author of this book. I have found three particular sayings in this book to be wise beyond measure: First, "Vanities of vanities, all is vanity!" -- The key to understanding Ecclesiastes in my opinion is to see that the book paints a realistic picture of what life is like under the Fall. Perhaps the best commentary on Ecclesiastes is Romans 8:20, which tells us God subjected all creation to futility in hope that the creation would be set free from bondage.

Second, "Remember your Creator." Paul makes clear in Romans 8:20ff that the Creator had a design in mind in redeeming the world from its futility. Thus, Ecclesiastes points to the redemptive work of Christ.

Finally, "Fear God and keep his commandments." The Covenant God requires fidelity from his people. Yet, God's commands are not burdensome; they are the gracious commands of a gracious God.

PBB Resource Requests

Just thought I would put out an offer. If there are books that you want in PBB format but do not have the tool, I will try to assist you with the conversion part. What I would ask of you:

1. Provide a Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer formatted document. Use the Header Styles to define the chapters and headers that you want in the book.
2. Provide at least one Internet URL that shows that the work is in the Public Domain.
3. Provide the reference (Internet URL if possible) of where the text came from; I want to be sure to credit the proper sources.
4. Provide the Title, Author, Language, Copyright (or public domain), Publisher, and optionally a description to be placed into the book's metadata.

If you are able to put this information and resource together that would mean very little work on my part. This should result in at most a one week turnaround on your PBB. If you are having trouble with one or more of the items above, I can try to help as time allows - but it would probably slow things down a little.

Anyway, the offer is made. :)

Today, Fred Carver requested the conversion of the book "Holiness: The False and The True" by Harry A Ironside. After review his request and the link provided I decided to fulfill this request immediately. Way of Life Literature had already put all the work into formatting the document and providing the rights to distribute it free of charge. Therefore with minimal Microsoft Word conversion work is was just a matter of minutes to provide this resource in PBB format for the community.

David, The King of Israel by F.W. Krummacher

This is my first submission to this site, although I must say I visit regularly and enjoy the blogs as well as the benefits from downloading the many PBB's available here. A big Thank you to all who compile them and make them available!

Krummacher's work on David is a classic which was reprinted by Klock & Klock. I scanned this from my personal library about four years back and recently did the painstaking work of editing. I have tried to maintain the look and feel of the original as much as possible. This was a labor of love and I trust you will enjoy.

Below is an excerpt from the Foreword by Cyril J. Barber.

"The life of David, Israel's shepherd, psalmist, and king, possesses a fascination all its own. A "man after the heart of God," he nevertheless demonstrated the weaknesses of the flesh. The psalms show him to be a man of like passions. He knew fear as well as joy, felt the hurt of injustice and the anguish of ingratitude, as well as the desire to establish an administration of justice as well as relieve the helplessness of the oppressed. All of these facets of David's colorful life and reign are captured by Friedrich Wilhelm Krummacher (1796-1868)."

Prayer and Preaching by Karl Barth

Greetings PBB fanatics,
I just (Fri, 05/16/2008 - 10:16am) found on my Hard drive what may be a "long lost" volume!
"Prayer and Preaching" by Karl Barth
This book is perhaps best summarized by a quote from James Stewart in the preface,

This little book on Prayer and Preaching demonstrates wonderfully Barth's characteristic union of simplicity and profundity. Certainly in these pages there is a Word from the Lord for the revitalizing of the Church.

John Donne: Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions

A PBB resource of John Donne's Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions is ready for download at the link below.

Devotions contains the famous phrase "No man is an island, entire of itself"; but it is also a classic on the subject of physical pain and suffering, and in particular, preparation for death. We don't like to think much about death today, much less muse and write about it.

My favorite quote in Devotions reads: "As death is the wages of sin it is due to me; as death is the end of sickness it belongs to me; and though so disobedient a servant as I may be afraid to die, yet to so merciful a master as thou I cannot be afraid to come;..."

Hengstenberg on the Psalms, Vol. 3

A PBB resource of E.W. Hengstenberg's Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 3 is now ready. You can download it below. Volume 3 contains commentary on Psalms 79-150 plus seven treatises in an appendix.

This 3-volume work is now complete. I am going to look into obtaining a copy of Hengstenberg's commentary on Revelation as my next project.

PBB Updater Updated

So, I have placed v1.1.7 of the PBB Updater on the site now. It has been fairly stable the last week or so and provides all of the recent fixes for the site changes. It no longer uses the file date/time stamp to determine if a file has been updated - but instead a checksum value for the file. If the file changes, the checksum will be different and it shows up as updated. Additionally, the updater now displays a status screen to let you see what it is doing while it is doing it.

And finally, the method by which it tracks what resources are available at StillTruth and what resources you have is now different. Site level changes may now happen and it will not break the updater - as that change will now be made to the resource listing on the server and downloaded each day (that you run updater) to your computer so it is always up-to-date.

Thanks to these changes there will be some other updates coming in the future. Such as support for providing the timeline files and other types of Libronix resource files. And hopefully, the updater will be able to provide you a list of resources on your computer that may be stale and no longer provided due to file updates (such as 14 volume works being combined into a single work).
