Treo 650

RIP TREO

Treo 650

I walked into my office this afternoon and picked up my cellphone and .... what.... oh man! My phone is dead. My beloved Treo 650 which has served well over the last few years gave up the digital ghost. It won't boot, and charging it only makes the battery hot. I have no idea why it finally perished but so be it.
The problem is I've lost my evening reading bible (Palmbible +) as well as my contacts, calendar, to do and well, all the stuff that I carry with me all the time in it's relatively tiny package. The biggest part I'm going to miss is the Bible. I took it visiting, and read it every night, even when I would wake up in the middle of the night since I could read it without lights on and the back light turned real low. I had the ESV, NIV, NASB, KJV, Greek, Hebrew and even Haitian Creole bibles on it plus a lot more.
So I rummaged through the closet and grabbed an old LG clamshell of my wife's which has a few quirks (defects) but at least it mostly works. I swapped my sim card and voila! I'm good to go at least for a few days while I pray about a replacement. I'm not sure I really want to go back to a full PDA phone even though I miss it. I'll get used to whatever I use. But what I need to make sure of is that I don't get something I don't need.
Any suggestions?

A Splash of Gratitude

There's no dainty way to say it.

I dropped my Treo 650 in the toilet.

It was a flushed toilet but it was a toilet. What else could I do though?  I plunged my hand into the water and fished it out.  Yes I washed my hands repeatedly after the panic.

When I pulled it out, my well used and yet still new phone immediately began to go on the fritz. The screen began flickering through the entire colorset and drawing random lines. The LED lit up and I heard static. As fast as I could I pulled the battery compartment open and ripped out the battery to stop further electrical damage. I pulled the simtray and the memory card also and wiped everything dry. I lined everything up on the bathroom sink to dry.

From the bedroom I hear my wife: "What was that noise". It's a reasonable question since it was 1AM (I had not been to bed yet). Moreover the loud clunk of a $300 smartphone hitting the toilet is not the same as other noises one might expect in the bathroom. (ahem...)

I began to realize just how big of a problem this could be. I have tons of stuff on that thing, Some is irreplaceable. I've made updates to a book I'm writing. I have lots of photos', several several bibles and tons of other stuff. The worst part is, I've also got no money to replace it.  Oh, and I hadn't run a sync / backup recently.

TREO!

I've gone Treo! I found a factory refurb Treo 650 on the Cingular
website. I got it at what seems to be a bargain. It arrived and I
activated it in just a few minutes (after charging it) and after using
it for a week, I really like it. Which is good, because it's going to
have to be my phone for a year or more (heavy emphasis on the "more"!)This
thing is ton's more powerful than my first computer, in fact if I could
just find some dongle that would let me run a full sized monitor with
it, I could get a bluetooth keyboard and use it for my computer. It has internet access (unlimited plans are a must) email, documents to go for writing sermons on the road; it has a small camera that takes decent pictures:

Anyway's it's a hope that I'll be able to use this as a tool rather than as a toy. I want to get more things done.
Next step? Figuring out how to use the treo for blog posts.
